Roman life was characterised by religion and cult. One of the basic principles of ancient religions is that of mutuality: The gods grant protection and help, and in return they receive worship and offerings from the people. In order to comply with this concept of mutuality, communication with the gods is required. This communication expresses itself in rituals and symbolic actions following a largely standardised behaviour. These include mainly the dedication of offerings, sacrifices and cult meals.

This was also the case in Colonia Ulpia Traiana. New excavations in the area of a Gallo-Roman temple on Insula 13 offer exciting insights into the religious activities of the people living at the site, which is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Frontiers of the Roman Empire – The Lower German Limes”.

The conference is aimed at gathering, discussing, and re-evaluating new results produced by latest / recent archaeological activities or the reassessment of old excavations. Taken together, this will contribute to the understanding of the religious life in Roman times on the UNESCO World heritage site “Frontiers of the Roman Empire – The Lower German Limes”.

The main focus will be on questions concerning concrete ritual acts such as sacrificial meals or cult meals, sacrificial rituals and dedications, their manifestation in the finds and the resulting possibilities and limits of interpretation.
